WHY
​
Make the processes and the mudas visible. VSM is used to determine the activities to be undertaken to improve performances, and especially to reduce the lead-time.
HOW
​
To improve a process, it is necessary to analyze it critically, each problem detected being a track of progress.
During the preparation phase, the process is chosen, the team is designed, the objectives are set and the timetable is defined.
The mapping is spread over 2 or 3 days depending on the complexity of the process analyzed.

Choice of level of detail, select a product to follow and build a competent team.

Description and visualization of the stages, preferably with post-it

Recording of data relating to each stage (working time, waiting time, checking time)

Highlighting mudas

Calculation of the overall values: working time (treatment), flow time (sum of waiting)

Proposals for improvement, definition of priorities, establishment of an action plan by a CI roadmap.

A follow-up period is necessary to ensure that the action plan is carried out properly and that the objectives are met.
WHAT
​
The process mapping it use to visualize the process using a simple signage to highlight its waste, defects and malfunctions.
Carried out by a cross-functional team, this activity is also an opportunity to share the findings on the current situation , define common goals, propose ideas for improvement, priorities for action and a road map for implement them.
